DRAIN CLEANING

Roto-Rooter® is traditionally recognized for its sewer and drain cleaning service and is proud to be #1 in the nation in this, our core business.

A Roto-Rooter® technican works to clear a clogged drain.

We accommodate all residential and commercial needs in this market. Options in the cleaning business are a relatively new idea. Only a few years back if you had a broken or rough spot in your line that caused you problems, many hours and much expense was incurred just to find the problem. Digging up yards and hunting for the spots was the norm. However, today that has changed and there are other ways to get that job done. If you have a broken spot, we can locate it from above ground using electronic equipment and pinpointing the spot. We can also send a video camera into the line and you can actually see your problem. If a repair is necessary, we can dig a small hole at the exact spot and repair the line, saving many man-hours and cost to you.

Should a whole line look bad, you may decide to replace it. If this is necessary, today it can be done with trenchless technology. In most cases we can replace the entire line trenchlessly. This protects the environment by eliminating the cost of replacement of landscaping, concrete driveways, sidewalks or many other items that would otherwise be damaged by the old method of replacing pipe.

Today Roto-Rooter® and you, our customer, have the power to choose. Remember with Roto-Rooter® "Away go troubles down the drain," and our track record shows, "We will be here tomorrow to back up what we did today."

SEPTIC TANKS & GREASE INTERCEPTORS PUMPED AND CLEANED

Roto-Rooter® maintains numerous grease interceptors and septic tanks throughout our franchise areas.

Most interceptor work is done for restaurants, hospitals and commercial complexes. Cities and local sanitary districts require that all grease interceptors be maintained.

The biggest mistake homeowners make with their septic tanks is not doing a regular maintenance on them – the old saying, "out of sight-out of mind". However, if your home is on a septic system, remember that you are running your own sewage disposal plant and must spend x-amount to maintain that system. The sewage is not being handled by a city or local private district – it's your responsibility. We recommend that you pump your tank every 4 to 5 years and clean the lines as needed.

Call for free advice on any related problem. Also, look under our helpful hints for other suggestions for things you should be doing to your septic tank system.

CLOSED CIRCUIT TV

One of the most versatile services we provide today is our closed circuit TV service. We have equipment available that can televise and record lines from 2" through 36". We furnish films or discs for your VCR. These can be provided in color for your instant viewing of problems and be kept as permanent records of your system.

Video inspection can be used in most size lines to inspect the pipe from the inside. We can do this for homeowners, cities or sewer districts. Simply seeing what and where a problem exists before you begin digging can save many thousands of dollars.

Routinely today, for some homeowners and most cities, a newly constructed sewer line is being televised to see and locate bad joints or sags in lines that could be a maintenance problem for the life of that line. If problems are found, most of the cities or sanitary districts will require the contractor to repair those spots or sections of pipe before the line can be put into use.

This TV process can save the taxpayers thousands of dollars over the life of the sewer line in maintenance costs.

HIGH PRESSURE PIPE CLEANING WITH WATER

One of the most modern tools in our industry today is equipment that uses water for pipe cleaning. Roto-Rooter® has mini-jetters for homeowner's lines that will clear the toughest stoppages that would stop the normal drain-cleaning equipment. It leaves your pipes free of scale and grease.

We also have, between the 3 counties, 4 hydro-vac trucks, 2 hydro trucks and 2 trailer-mounted hydros. These trucks are mainly used for cities, sewer districts, commercial and industrial accounts. When they are loaded, they carry 500 feet of high-pressure hose for cleaning larger lines. The vac-trucks have tanks that carry 10 to 11 cubic yards of debris. The hydro-vac trucks are used when the debris must be hauled offsite. The hydro is used when debris is left on-site. The trailer mount units are used in hard to get to areas. All the trucks and trailer mounts run 2000 psi, if needed.

As we go further into the 21st century, you will see these trucks being used more and more. Especially as the 'clean water act' that went into effect in the 70s begins to gain enforcement from public agencies. Most debris will have to be disposed of off-site at private landfills.

Another use for the vac trucks is pot holing of utility lines and checking their depths as engineers draw plans for new systems as our cities grow. Most of this work is done for cities and private districts but can also be done for apartment complexes and shopping centers or malls. It can also be for anyone that thinks there may be a conflict with any new construction. If you have a need for this equipment, we are just a phone call away.

MAINLINE RODDER

The primary function of Roto-Rooter®'s mainline rodder is to clean large commercial and industrial lines that can't be cleaned with high-pressure water. They may be root-bound or clogged with mud and silt mixed with roots and other foreign matter that gets into storm drains (i.e., newspapers, wood, kids toys, baseballs, soccer balls, etc.). This rodder can clean lines from 4" to 30" in diameter.

When fully loaded, this machine carries 1,000 feet of rod. It can also be used as a threading machine. As the high-pressure cleaning equipment slowly gets better, look for this machine to be used less and less. But for today, if you have a need, give us a call.

LINE LOCATING

Roto-Rooter® has equipment for line locating and tracing. Running a transponder through the line from a cleanout or the vent on a roof accomplishes this. As it is fed through the line our technician is tracking and mapping above ground with a receiver that gets a signal from the transponder.

Should you be locating a broken spot, just push your transponder to the spot, pick up your signal above ground and you're ready to dig. Some other uses for mapping are if you are adding onto your home and there's a possibility that it may be over your sewer or water lines - have them located first. Same thing if you're having a swimming pool installed, know if your water or sewer may be in the way of your project. As always, call us for free advice.

LEAK DETECTION

Using a highly sensitive sound meter and headset to listen above ground or on a slab floor, we can locate leaks and save time. Often even the tiniest leak can be pinpointed before any digging is started. This can save you thousands of dollars in labor while doing repairs.

BACKFLOW TESTING

We have plumbers that are certified by the state in backflow testing. They are qualified to test and make any necessary repairs and/or adjustments. This must be done every year by state law. If we perform your testing, we will put you in our computer and will remind you each year when it is time to recertify your backflow devices.

SMOKE TESTING

Smoke testing is a method used mostly by cities and sanitary districts to hunt for leaks in pipes where water may flow into sewer lines. Also, they hunt for yard drains that drain into sewer lines. This is illegal. All water that goes into sewers must be treated as wastewater and is a cost to the taxpayer – therefore, it must be only sewer water and not rainwater that gets into sewer lines.

Another thing that smoke testing is used for is locating odors. There have been vent pipes that have come apart in the walls, or small leaks under homes that cause sewer odors. By filling the lines with smoke, we can see the leaks when testing, locate and repair the spots. If you have a problem and may need this service or some advice on odors, give us a call.

LINE FOAMING

Roto-Rooter® has the license required by the state for foaming and treating sewer lines for root control. This type of work is mainly done for cities and private districts. We do, however, foam many lines for homeowners. If you have a need for this service call us.

TRENCHLESS PIPE REPLACEMENT

WHAT IS TRENCHLESS PIPE REPLACEMENT?

Trenchless pipe replacement is a method of renewing old pipe with new pipe of the same or larger-inner diameter.

Our tools accomplish this by pulling a hardened steel-splitting head through the existing pipe. This method allows your old pipe to become your guide tube and the engineer for your new line. This method requires a large amount of pulling power. Our tools provide this. Your new pipe will be attached to the back of the splittinghead and pulled in as the existing pipe is split and expanded. The new pipe is in the path of the old and lies in its rubble. No dirt or old pipe to haul off to fill up our landfill sites and pollute our environment.

This method is not "slip lining"; however, our tools can be used for "slip lining" jobs if your need is for this.

WHO NEEDS TRENCHLESS?

ANY OWNER OF PIPE THAT FAILS IN MOST DIFFICULT SITUATIONS - AS IN:

Well-landscaped yards, busy streets, tennis courts, alleyways, under buildings,
driveways, concrete, easements under swimming pools etc.

The more difficult the task, the more need for TRENCHLESS technology. We can replace pipe with less than 10% of normal dig methods. This will equate to a saving in not only replacement costs, but also engineering and surveying costs as well (Not to mention the down time to your streets, plants or business).

MATERIALS USED FOR TRENCHLESS

Trenchless tools are designed for use with polyethylene pipe. This type of pipe is joined by fusion weld. This means that the ends are trimmed and then melted. The two melted ends are then pulled together by a fusion machine and held in place until the melt cures and cools. The result is a seamless pipe that provides the same strength as the rest of the pipe. No seams, no leaking joints, and no roots. High-density polyethylene pipe is used the world over for pressure water and gas utilities.

Some other features of high-density polyethylene pipe are:

WHAT IS THE FUTURE OF TRENCHLESS TECHNOLOGY?

Due to the aging of our nation and its infrastructure together with the awareness of the effects of pollution on our environment, a need to create strict-code requirements by our government and its local municipalities exists. Combine all of those factors and you can see trenchless is the wave of the future for the sewer industry.

With the clean water act of the 70s, we are entering a high-growth period for the sewer business. Trenchless tools are one method that will allow us to help meet the demand for changing times. Here at Roto-Rooter® we have the equipment for the replacing of 4" through 8" pipe in our yard. We can do larger pipe on short notice and we are available on short notice should an emergency arise.

Remember, with trenchless we are talking about drastically reducing time, a small excavation, much less restoration, if any, and the ability to avoid obstacles. All of this makes for cost-effectiveness. So give us a call should you have a pipe failure. I think you'll be glad you did!
